The Beginning
Nobody grows up in Chevy Chase, Maryland dreaming of running a professional basketball team in Atlantic Canada. That's not how dreams work in the suburbs of Washington, DC. But sometimes life has a different playbook entirely — and the best stories are the ones nobody saw coming.
Building the League
On May 12, 2011, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, we held the press conference. Three PBL teams — Halifax, Quebec, and our Saint John Mill Rats — were announced as the founding members of the National Basketball League of Canada. Four more expansion franchises would follow. We were building something from nothing.
Game Day at Harbour Station
There is nothing quite like the roar inside Harbour Station on a Saturday night. Six thousand fans who never expected professional basketball in their backyard, now on their feet, screaming for a team that didn't exist two years ago. The Mill Rats weren't just a team — they were a community happening.
The Long Shot
From a kid shooting hoops in a driveway to a summer job on Nantucket, from buying a landscaping company to moving his family across an international border — every step was serendipitous, improbable, and somehow exactly right. This is the story of how all those long shots actually landed.

ABOUT THE SERIES

Ian McCarthy was born in 1970 in Washington, DC and was adopted at birth. He grew up in Chevy Chase, Maryland, spending summers on Nantucket. He attended Gonzaga College High School, graduating in 1988, then earned a Business Degree from Champlain College in Vermont in 1992.

He joined an accounting firm on Nantucket Island in 1994, leading to the purchase of a landscaping company in 1996. Ian married that same year and eventually moved to Cape Cod, where he and his wife Tiffany raised two sons, Payton and Connor.

In 2010, Ian and his family moved to Saint John, New Brunswick and launched the Saint John Mill Rats professional basketball team. In 2011, he and partner Andre Levingston co-founded the National Basketball League of Canada — a seven-team professional league that would grow to become Canada's longest-running professional basketball league.

Mill Rats: The Book Series is a three-part series telling the unlikely, serendipitous story of that entire journey — from driveway pickup games to press conferences, from landscaping routes to courtside seats.
